Service/Procedures?

Postby EVP Professional on 02 Feb 2005 03:15

Dear "eternity",
My name is Doug Churchill and I am the Vice President Professional affairs for the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers' Associations (IFATCA).
Allow me to offer some insight into your question. First of all, let me say I understand your frustration in the lack of recognition you feel you do not receive for your good work. As air traffic controllers we all may feel the same at times. It is because we perform our daily tasks according to the rules, regulations and approved procedures that our system operates safely and smoothly. We must accept however that due to the nature of our work we are subjected to scrutiny by our supervisors, and there will always be an element of their "style of control" or their own way of doing things that may have some influence on their assesments of controllers in every-day operations. The supervisory role is a demanding one requiring knowledge and experience in ATC along with desire, ability and human-relations skills, but supervisory "techniques" will vary with the individual. Of course we all hope that our superiors operate with open-mindedness, fairness and objectivity. After all, the fact that they are in this position should indicate they have received supervisory and management courses which meet the requirements of the position.
IFATCA supports a proficiency checking system for all qualified air traffic controllers who exercise the privileges of an ATC license. Our policy is that Member Associations should, together with their management, draw up a "code of conduct" which will help guarantee both objectivity and confidentiality of controller performance checks. We believe that where a checking system has been implemented, a controller who is selected to act in the check controller role should undergo a specialist course of training that prepared him/her for the task, and showed ways to achieving fair, objective, and valid assessments. Hopefully supervisors will have had the benefit of this type of training course as well.
With this in mind, should you feel you are experiencing a form of "unfair treatment" I would encourage you to discuss this initially with your representatives/superiors in an effort to have your concerns brought forward and to develope a solution that will adequately address them. I hope this has helped you.

well tell the trueth... it's quiet a complicated to say that u were wrong, but from other side just try to listen what you s-viser telling you... it's easier sometimes to knod your head eventhough u know that u'r right...
And the end i'd like to say that your situation is not so bad... u even have no idea what is the situation when it comes to my country.... every teacher teaches in it's own way... when i say something like but u know it's written like this... in ICAO doc .... they say something like hey you young b...d :P Because of i was trying to protect my opinion i still can't get my validation eventhough i'm already working 2 years... and still working as an assisstant... and the situation is very bad here, i just hope that the situation will get better in next 10 years. U have no rights to complain, u have no rights to say something against your administration doesn't matter you were right or not...
Mate take care. Our time will come. Cause we are much higher educated, we are much better oriented, and we know how to be judged wrongly, that's why we won't make that kind of stupid mistakes. Good luck!

I think when it comes to these situations, you have to follow procedures to avoid getting into trouble. But if its a critical situation(life and death), I think you have to follow your instincts.
