October 20th marks both the International Day of the Air Traffic Controller and the 65th birthday of IFATCA, which was founded in 1961.
We must admire the foresight of those 12 founding members who understood the need for controllers to have a common voice and a common purpose. Over the past 65 years, the Federation has grown from the original 12 Member Associations to over 130 Member Associations worldwide, making IFATCA the largest international professional body representing Air Traffic Controllers.
Our focus remains firmly on the people behind the profession ensuring that the systems, policies, and practices supporting air traffic control are designed with the human element at the core. We strengthen IFATCA’s policies and guidance through research, evidence-based recommendations, and the sharing of best practices among Member Associations (MAs). We also work closely with international organisations to promote safe, resilient and sustainable aviation systems worldwide.
We continue to be the professional voice of air traffic controllers, advocating for them as the most crucial component of the air traffic management (ATM) system. Our 2026 theme, “Attract them, Value them, Keep them,” is more than a slogan, it is a call to action and priority for future-proofing the ATM sector.
Again we appeal to aviation decision-makers to commit the necessary resources to recruitment, training, and retention of air traffic control professionals. Investing in our people means investing in the future of aviation. By ensuring the growth, wellbeing, and sustainability of the workforce, we can continue to deliver the safe, efficient, and resilient skies and runways that the flying public depends on and deserves.
Happy International Day of the Controller to air traffic controllers all over the world, it is our privilege to represent you.
And happy birthday IFATCA, may you continue to grow!
