Introduction

Critical incidents can lead to stress reactions – so-called post-traumatic stress reactions – for the staff involved. Crisis intervention methods, being part of a Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) programme, are designed to help people negatively affected by such events, to recover from these affects and return to normal functioning and behaviour.

Such interventions create advantages for the staff in Air Navigation Services and their employers because employees can return to their normal duties more quickly following an incident. Critical Incident Stress Management programs were introduced voluntarily in the early nineties (Baumgartner, 2006). In Europe, since the entry into force of the 373/2017 regulation, it has been mandatory for the European Union States members, plus Norway and Switzerland, to set up a Critical Stress Management program.

The Data

The International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers Associations (IFATCA) has surveyed its members. The results are presented on the interactive map below. A pop-up window gives an overview of the current status of such a CISM program in the territory of the IFATCA Member Association. If needed, a PDF version can be downloaded by clicking the button at the end of the overview.

Below is a consolidated overview that lists all 42 Member Associations within Europe. Note that some Member Associations are still researching the data, and we will add their data as soon as possible.
